Description
My digitally enhanced photograph of Nike di Kalkis was taken on the seafront of Giardini Naxos, in the Metropolitan City of Messina on the island of Sicily in southern Italy. It is situated on the coast of the Ionian Sea on a bay which lies between Cape Taormina and Cape Schisò. The statue, Nike di Kalkis, is a metal version of the Hellenisticl sculpture of Nike which is famously known as a Greek goddess. The author of the poem is Guillaume Apollinaire born 9-26-1880 in Rome, Italy and died at age 38 in Paris, France on 11-9-1918. He was a French poet, playwright, short story writer, novelist, and art critic of Polish-Belarusian descent. He is considered one of the foremost poets of the early 20th century, as well as one of the most impassioned defenders of Cubism and a forefather of Surrealism. He is credited with coining the term "Cubism" in 1911 to describe the emerging art movement, the term Orphism in 1912, and the term "Surrealism" in 1917. There are several variations of this poem, but this is my favorite.
