Description
Vieste is an attractive whitewashed town jutting off the Gargano's easternmost promontory into the Adriatic Sea. It is a town and comune in the province of Foggia, in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. A marine resort in Gargano, Vieste has received Blue Flags for the purity of its waters from the Foundation for Environmental Education. Its territory, due to favorable climatic conditions and close proximity to the sea, was inhabited since the Neolithic era, with populations dedicated to agriculture, sheep farming, fish and subsequently sea commerce with other populations in the Mediterranean basin. The Medieval historic center rises up on the rocks, dominated by the Castle built by Federico II, while the majority of the residential buildings can be found between the Castle and San Felice point, stretching out towards the Lanterna Tower of Vieste. Vieste also has a busy calendar of events: musical performances, film festivals art and craft Fairs, ballet shows and much, much more. The typical cuisine includes orecchiette, ncapriata and the legendary wild onions otherwise known as lampasciuni. The name Vieste can be linked with the cult of the Goddess Vesta (virgin goddess of the hearth, home, and family) probably in relation to nostalgia felt for the homeland by the first Greek inhabitants.
