Description
Photograph taken in Istanbul, Turkey at the Blue Mosque. Wuḍu is the Islamic procedure of washing parts of the body using water, typically in preparation for formal prayers (salat), but also before handling and reading the Qur'an. Wuḍu is often translated as "partial ablution", as opposed to ghusl, or "full ablution". Muslims who are unable to perform the prevailing form of ablution, due to skin disease or a disability, are recommended to perform tayammum. Their Prophet said 'cleanliness is half of faith'. Wudu is the ritual washing performed by Muslims before prayer. They must be clean and wear good clothes before they present themselves before God. Purification of the body and clothes is called taharah. To have taharah for the body, one should do either ghusl or wuḍu. If the feet are not washed but rather merely wiped during wudu, their wudu would be considered invalid. Being in the state of valid wudu is an absolute precondition for prayers. If prayers are offered in a state of invalid wudu, their prayers would also be invalid.
