Description
Cervo is situated in the west of the northern Italian region of Liguria and ranks among the most beautiful towns in northern Italy. Even today Cervo retained its amazing medieval atmosphere. The historic city center can be reached only on foot, which increases its magical atmosphere. The city's patron is Saint John the Baptist, to whom is dedicated the most important church in Cervo called San Giovanni Battista Church. One of its main attractions is the fine baroque church of St. John the Baptist, overlooking the sea. The Romanesque "Oratorio di Santa Caterina" contains semi-perished 16th century frescoes. Town centre is surrounded by a medieval fortifications with remarkable towers. A symbol of Cervo is definitely the castle Clavesana from the 13th century, which in past ensured the defence of the city but also of the lords of Cervo. People used to earn their living as coral fishermen in the Corsican and Sardinian seas, in addition to being olive growers and seafarers. The economy of Cervo is nowadays based on tourism and agriculture and 16th-century towers and ramparts are still protecting the village.
