Land designated for conservation, both national parks and reserves, contains a wide range of habitats both in Britain (Moore 1976) and New Zealand, ensuring that virtually all species of Odonata are conserved within them. In both countries however, many habitats outside these protected areas are being destroyed, primarily by agriculture. This process can have the effect of isolating protected populations and causing their decline or even extinction. Therefore efforts to conserve wetlands on ordinary farmland in both countries are valuable for conservation. The efforts of organizations such as the Farming and Wildlife Trust in the United Kingdom, and the Queen Elizabeth the Second Trust in New Zealand, should be supported enthusiastically by entomologists in the respective countries.
