Description
Dragonflies are flying insects 1 to 4 inches in length that zip across water and are one of the fastest flyers in the insect world. Most dragonflies fly at 10 miles per hour. However, some can move at a maximum of 30 mph. You can see them make sharp stops and turns, and then stop again and hover for a while. They are extremely acrobatic; they can even fly backwards and in loops. Dragonflies are fascinating creatures. They come in various colors and have a very distinct appearance. In their aquatic stage, they can live for years in freshwater. Predators such as frogs, spiders and birds can shorten an airborne dragonflys already brief lifespan. Young dragonflies are called nymphs and when they hatch, they have gills and live underwater for up to five years. According to Dragonfly-Site, dragonflies symbolize maturity, poise and self-created illusions.
