Description
The port and the old part of town, Menton is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Cd'Azur region in southeastern France in the district of Nice. This French city is situated on the French Riviera along the Franco-Italian border. Menton, nicknamed the Pearl of France(la perle de la France), is located on the Mediterranean Sea just across from the Ligurian town of Ventimiglia. It boasts a warm micro-climate favorable to lemon, tangerine, and orange groves and one of the town's symbols is the lemon. The baroque basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange, with its belltower, was built in 1619 by the Genoese architect Lorenzo Lavagna. Menton is home to at least half a dozen beaches. The historic covered market was built in 1898 by local architect Adrien Rey. Over 30 kiosks both inside and around the market sell local and imported vegetables. The Belle oque structure was one of many famous buildings constructed by the architect in the region. Next to the beach and the covered market is the Jean Cocteau Museum. It opened in 2011 and is close to the Bastion Museum. Mentons old town is a cascade of pastel-coloured buildings. From place du Cap a ramp leads to southern Frances grandest baroque church, Italianate Basilique St-Michel Archange , whose creamy facade is flanked by a 35m-tall clock tower and 53m-tall steeple (170103).
