A sweet baby giraffe with his mother licks his lips with his huge tongue while smiling for my camera. The Los Angeles Zoo has welcomed several newborn Masai giraffes throughout the years. Mother gives birth standing up. The calves are born with eyes open and are able to stand, walk & run in just one hour. They are a subspecies native to Kenya and Tanzania. They are recently deemed to be one of the most endangered animals in the wild. They can weigh up to 130 pounds at 13 days and stands just 6 feet tall. Masai giraffes can grow higher than 17 feet tall. All types of giraffe are considered ‘under threat’ due to habitat loss, illegal hunting and disease.
