Description
Black & White digital composition of a flamingo. Flamingo or flamingoes are a of tall, pink wading birds with thick downturned bills in the family Phoenicopteridae. Flamingos have slender legs, long, graceful necks, large wings, and short tails. They range from about 3 to 5 feet tall. The name "flamingo" comes from Portuguese or Spanish flamengo, "flame-colored". The generic name Phoenicopterus (from Greek) literally means "blood red-feathered". Other genera include Phoeniconaias, which means "crimson/red water nymph", and Phoenicoparrus, which means "crimson/red bird". The bird’s pink colour comes from its food, which contains carotenoid pigments. The diet of flamingos kept in zoos is sometimes supplemented with food coloring to keep their plumage from fading.
