Description
San Leo is a municipality in the Province of Rimini in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 84 mi southeast of Bologna and about 22 mi southwest of Rimini. San Leo is home to a large fortress at an elevation of 2,000 ft above sea level. Perched on its rocky headland, San Leo and its powerful fortress dominate the surroundings. Theres been a fortress at San Leo since the Romans founded a city on the rock. The village keeps a medieval character thanks to its old stones houses and streets. The menacing fortress clamped to the summit of a dizzying precipice in the northern tip of Le Marche, has staggered generations of visitors with its intimidating beauty. Machiavelli praised it, Dante modelled the terrain of his Purgatory on it, and Pietro Bembo considered it Italys most beautiful implement of war. In fact its not as impregnable as it seems; one of the few invaders to have actually been repelled was Cesare Borgia, despite his having first persuaded a weak-willed retainer to give him the key.
