Description
Emilia, the lace lady of Burano, continues to make her lace while her cat lazily stretches. I was lucky to be there at that exact moment! Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. It is situated near Torcello and is known for its lacework and is also known for its small, brightly painted houses, popular with artists. The colors of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colors permitted for that lot. It rose in importance only in the 16th century, when women on the island began making lace with needles. When Leonardo da Vinci visited in 1481, he purchased a cloth for the main altar of the Duomo di Milano in Lefkara. The lace was soon exported across Europe and in 1872 a school of lacemaking was opened. Lacemaking on the island boomed again, but few now make lace in the traditional manner as it is extremely time-consuming and therefore expensive.

What a charming capture. I don't know what I find more delightful, the cat stretching on the floor before her or her short legs propped up on that concrete block. Gorgeous work - I so admire the handiwork of people like this. My CAT in the MOUSE group for February 17.
