Description
Photograph of 'Adamo' carved in a block of Carrara marble inside the Ravaccione quarries. They are located at an elevation of around 444 metres in the Apuan Alps. They have been carved deep into the mountains, creating large underground caverns. Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed of it. Many sculptures of the Renaissance were carved from Carrara marble, including DAVID. Carrara is a city in the Province of Massa and Carrara, Tuscany, Italy, notable for the white or blue-grey marble quarried there. It is on the Carrione River, some 62 mi west-northwest of Florence. This quarry is in the Ravaccione quarrying valley near Carrara, Tuscany, Italy. It is one of the three areas that are the sources of the famous white Carrara marble used for architecture and building construction.
